Un ensemble d’ iles constituent New York; ceci explique certainement pourquoi la ville est à l’ origine de nombreuses prouesses techniques en matières de ponts et de tunnels.New York a été la première ville a posséder un tunnel routier , pendant des années le plus longs du monde avec entre autre le ‘ brooklyn battery tunnel ‘ en 1950; une prouesses technologiques en matière de sytème de ventilation.
Coté ponts, le premier, le ‘king’s Bridge’, a été construit en 1693 et reconstruit en 1917. Le ‘ brooklyn bridge’ ouvert en 1883 a été le premier pont suspendu construit. Aujourd’hui, la ville compte 2027 ponts dont 76 franchissent de l’ eau. Le ‘ high bridge’ construit en 1848 ,permet d’ acheminer l’ eau à Manhattan.
